Question of the Week: What is the last book that kept you up late into the night just to finish it?

A: That would have to be Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood and I read it just last weekend.  I've been lucky so far this month with liking/loving most of the books I've read, but Born Wicked stands out.  I made it about halfway through the book and couldn't put it down after that.

Question of the Week: What New Years Blogging or Writing resolution have you placed on yourself?

A:  I have two actual blogging resolutions this year.  The first is to read and post reviews for at least 100 books this year.  Simple resolution, right?  Let's hope I can do it.  I keep psyching myself out about it, like "Ah!  That's like ...almost two books a week!"  But that's what I usually do anyway, save for this week.

The second is that I wanted to break outside my norm and read a classic each month for 2013, then do a short post about why that particular book is a classic.  This month is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.

Thanks for hopping by my blog!  I'm doing a giveaway in honor of the new year on the next post down, so please take a look!

Question of the Week: What book do you think everyone should read?  If you could gift the entire population with one book?

A:  I have to say Harry Potter.  And obviously I mean all seven (though my favorites are Prisoner of Azkaban and Order of the Phoenix).  I recommend to everyone on Earth to get a bit lost in the world of those books.

Now for the follow fun!

Question of the Week:  What is the last book that made you cry?  Tell us about that scene...

A:  Wow, this happened last night.  It's not like I cry at every book though, promise.  ...maybe every other book. -- anyway!  So I was reading the last half of Feed by Mira Grant, and the rest is a huge spoiler.  Highlight to see if you don't mind spoiling anything: Georgia Mason, the main character AND narrator, dies.  Suddenly and tragically, she's murdered by a dart carrying the zombie-making virus.  That part wasn't what caused the tears to fall; it was the blog post she does while waiting to become a zombie.  All the while she's writing, her extremely co-dependent brother is holding a gun to her head waiting.  She descends into zombie madness going between telling her brother she loves him and nonsense, finally begging her brother to end it.
Moose.  Found cursor.  Yay!  I also may have spilled some happy tears at the end of Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross and some devastated tears at the end of Delirium by Lauren Oliver (there's a terrible story that goes with that).  So maybe I cry a little less than every other book.  Or I'm lying. O_o

Let the hopping begin!

Question of the Week:  Activity!  Who do you want to be?  If you could be any character from a book.  What do you think that character looks like and what do you have in common?

A:  This is tough question!  I think I have to go with Meghan Chase from the Iron King series by Julie Kagawa.  She gets to go on adventures through the Nevernever; how cool is that?  And her side-kicks include Puck and a snark talking cat.  Wahhh!!  Meghan Chase, I want your life!  As for what she looks like, in the book she is described with long blonde hair and green eyes, but I always imagined her with strawberry blonde hair and a heart shaped face.  I think my version was a bit more faerie-like than what Julie Kagawa intended.  She's loyal and stubborn, which I can see in myself.  She's also brave, but I don't think I've ever had a time where I had to be brave... so maybe we have that in common too and I'll never know for sure?

Question of the Week: What blog are you thankful for?

A: The first blogger that popped into my head was Megan from YA Reviews by the Book Babe.  She just hosted her first ARC tour for Dust by Devon Ashley (it was also my first ARC tour to participate in) and it was a really great experience being apart of it.  We both loved the book and fan-girled in e-mail a bit, so there was quite a bit of happiness involved and I am thankful for it.

Question of the Week: Books are turned into movies all the time!  Turn it around.  What movie would make a great book?

A: It's been awhile for me since I've watched an amazing movie that wasn't originally a book.

...

Okay, I sat rubbing my eyes thinking for five or so minutes, and Cloverfield from 2008 popped into my head.  At first, I was like "That's ridiculous."  But after giving it some thought, I think it could make a really cool book.  Maybe give it alternating perspectives, bouncing from the group of people trying to save that one girl and get out of the city to the military planning their nuclear attack on the monster.  It could add to the suspense, like "Omg! Are they gonna make it out before they blow up NYC? Holy amazeballs!"

Mmm...maybe I'm just crazy and a little too into survival reads right now.

Question of the Week:  Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

A: As long as the book is its own distinct work, then yes.  I think I love fairy tale retelling more than other books because they play on the fact that it is working off of something else.  I think that came out weird… what I mean is with retellings, you have those “Oic wut u did thar” moments where they incorporate the old myths and stories into another completely new story.  I love it when authors pull something from an old story and stick it into the modern world in a way that works.

With books that aren’t supposed to be a retelling and are just similar, I think as long as it’s not blaringly obvious, I don’t mind if two books are alike.  For example, I found a lot of similarities in Lauren Oliver’s Delirium to Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series.  But while reading I wasn’t put off by it -- it was more of a “Huh, I wonder if Lauren Oliver read Uglies.”

I haven’t read any pulled-to-publish fanfic that I know of, so I don’t have much of an opinion on it.

Question of the Week: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can’t deal with bad editing?

A: While I dislike love triangles and alternating POVs, they're not deal breakers for me.  Even if a book has bad grammar or typos, I'll still try and trudge on through it.  The only real deal breaker for me is if I've read a significant chunk of the book and nothing has happened yet.  Drives me up the wall.  If I'm bored and feel as if I'm only waiting for something to happen, more than likely I won't finish it.

Question of the Week: What writing device or trick most irritates you when you read a book?  For example, when an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

A: I typically dislike alternating POVs.  Especially if each are written differently, like in Of Poseidon by Anna Banks, where the one main character was narrated in first person, but the other had third person narration.  It was disorienting to read and I think that after reading so many books where the device was used badly, it's just become a pet peeve for me if it's there.  I don't think I've ever set down a book only because of alternating POVs, but I've come close.

Paper Towns
Where for art thou, Margo?

Question of the Week is: When you step out of your USUAL genre what do you like to read? Best books in that genre?

A: My usual genre would be fantasy and sci-fi YA, and I don't read a whole heck of a lot outside of that.  When I say fantasy and sci-fi, I mean all of the above within them.  Urban fantasy, dystopian, steampunk, paranormal romance, etc.  If it can't happen in the real world (that we know of), I read it.  When I do cross over into other genres, I read contempory (non-paranormal) lit (still YA though, usually).  I would say Paper Towns by John Green is the best I've read outside my norm.

Question of the Week is: What book do you think would make a great Halloween movie?  Please explain in graphic detail of goriness...
Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1)

This was a surprisingly hard question for me since I haven't read anything even remotely scary in...months.  Maybe over a year.  I guess I was reserving all my scary reads for October, maybe?

I would have to say that my pick would be Anna Dressed in Blood.  I don't know that it's really a scary book, but it is definately appropriate for Halloween.  She does kill people.

I feel like I have a rather lame answer this week.  Next week's will be better!
